The Brno City Museum was founded in 1904. It was first located on the site of today's New Town Hall. The museum continues the legacy of an important Brno citizen, Heinrich Gomperz, who donated his collections to the museum. In 1935, the city museum was moved to Šilingrovo Square (today's Hotel Barceló), to the so-called City court.
A major turning point came in 1960, when the museum was moved to the Špilberk castle, which significantly influenced its future development, character and appearance. In 1962 the castle was declared a National Cultural Monument.
